Course Tutor: Tom Davies

Tom is a knowledgeable and experienced fitness expert with a passion for health, fitness and wellbeing. He has been working in health and fitness education since 2010 as a lecturer and trainer in both further and higher education. For over ten years he has trained Personal Trainers to work in the leisure industry as health professionals. This includes developing their ability to motivate, persuade and influence their clients to take responsibility for their own health and engage in healthy habits. 

 

He has volunteered with community based GP Referral schemes that target the obese population. These schemes offer training, support and dietary advice to improve fitness, reduce weight and enhance health. Tom now works as a Personal Trainer and Rehab Coach at the 'Movement and Therapy Clinic' based in Ampthill. There he provides one-to-one and small group training to clients who have a range of health and fitness needs.

Weekend 1:

Saturday 23rd March (13:00 - 16:00)

The first weekend will introduce essential nutritional terminology. You will explore how the digestive system works providing you with a fundamental understanding of how food is processed inside your body. The importance of hydration will be discussed with consideration for how it impacts physical activity. We will then examine the macro- and micro-nutrients considering their sources and subsequent impact on the body. 

Weekend 2: 

Saturday 6th April (13:00 - 16:00)
Sunday 7th April (13:00 - 16:00)

The second weekend will examine calories and how they can be used to create energy balance for weight maintenance, a caloric surplus for weight gain and caloric deficit for sustainable weight loss. The impact of metabolism on weight management will progress into an exploration of obesity and its affect on health. The role that hormones play on our sense of hunger will allow us to apply practical strategies to improve a sense of satiety.

Sunday 21st April (13:00 - 16:00)

The third weekend moves onto healthy eating guidelines with consideration for how these can be used to create healthy habits and long term behaviour changes that have a positive effect on health. This week will allow us to apply practical strategies that can used in practice via consultation, analysis and feedback to help people achieve their goals. Coursework will be assigned to those who want to work towards certification. 

Assessment Day: 

Friday 26th April (19:15 - 20:15)

Venue: Akarmalife Studio (Ampthill)

The assessment day will start with a multiple choice exam. The questions are based on the theoretical content that has been taught on the course. The exam consists of 10 multiple choice questions and you are required to score at least 70% (7/10) to pass. You have 15 minutes to sit the exam. The remainder of the evening is available as a workshop to complete the coursework which will then be submitted to the tutor for marking.

Who is this course for? 

  • The course is suitable for anyone who wants to know more about nutrition. The content covers the fundamental knowledge that you need to guide yourself and / or others to eat more healthily and achieve nutrition-based goals

  • For those who want to gain a qualification out of the course, there is the option to take the assessments which are outlined below

 

How will I be assessed? 

  • Taking the assessments is optional (you don't have to do these if you don't want the qualification / certificate at the end of the course)

  • To be certificated you will need to achieve each of the following: 

    • Attendance (100% attendance to all scheduled lessons)

    • Coursework (This work documents your consultation and subsequent advice to a live case study)

    • Multiple Choice Theory Exam (10 Questions - 70% Pass Mark)

  • ​Once passed, you will receive a Level 3 Award in Nutrition for Physical Activity (Awarding Body: YMCA Awards)

What will the certificate qualify me to do? 

  • The qualification is on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications

  • Achievement of the qualification will provide entry to the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) at Practitioner Level (Exercise and Fitness)

  • You will be qualified to provide nutritional advice based on evidence-based Government Guidance

How will the course be taught? 

  • The course will be taught in a face to face classroom setting, allowing you to interact with the teacher and explore the content in person

  • To accompany the taught content you will have access to an online classroom (Via Google Classroom) which gives you live access to the materials that are used on the course

  • You will be given a nutrition book at the start of the course which will contain directed reading to accompany each lesson

How much is the course?

  • The full cost of the course is £399. This covers your attendance to all face-to-face training and your registration with the awarding body

  • You are entitled to one attempt at the exam (Re-sits cost £25)

  • You are entitled to feedback on your coursework for one free re-submission (Additional submissions cost £25 for re-marking)

What happens if I miss a lesson? 

  • Course content will be available to watch via an online classroom

  • Additional private one-to-one training is available at £50 / hour
